Staten Island Mom Saves Lightning Strike Victim

When lightning struck congressional staffer Thomas Fahmy last week on Staten Island, his cries for help reached exactly the right person at exactly the right moment.

Stefanie Homan was inside her home with her baby son when she heard Fahmy calling out. Despite the terrifying thunderstorm still raging and her frightened child in her arms, she rushed to her front door.

"I heard Thomas say 'help me, help me' so I ran to my door and I opened it and I saw him on the ground," Homan recalled. She immediately dialed 911 and welcomed the complete stranger into her home while comforting her scared baby and waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Fahmy, who works in Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis's Staten Island office, survived the lightning strike thanks to Homan's quick response. He's now recovering well after treatment at Staten Island University Hospital.

This week, Congresswoman Malliotakis presented Homan with a Congressional Commendation for her heroic actions. The recognition celebrates not just one woman's courage, but the spirit of community care that defines Staten Island.
