Stevens Point Launches Volunteer Emergency Response Team

Stevens Point is creating a volunteer squad to help its community when disaster strikes.

The Wisconsin city launched a new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) after more than a year of planning between its fire and police departments. The idea came from a community service officer who saw the need for trained volunteers ready to step up during emergencies.

The team will provide food, water, and supplies during large-scale emergencies. Volunteers will also help with search and rescue operations and teach the community about emergency preparedness.

"Whenever you have a disaster or big emergency, there's a lot of needs," said Justin Malin, deputy fire marshal and emergency management coordinator for the Stevens Point Fire Department.

The city has 22 volunteer positions available, and 11 people have already applied. Officials want enough volunteers to cover any emergency situation the city might face.

No special skills are required. The city is looking for team players with good communication skills who can stay calm under pressure and want to help their neighbors.

The Ripple Effect

Selected volunteers will train once or twice a month in first aid, CPR, and emergency management systems. They'll complete FEMA courses to prepare for real-world situations.

The city plans to deploy CERT members starting in January. These trained volunteers will become an extension of emergency services, multiplying the city's ability to help people during crises.

"Being able to help somebody, especially when they might be having a bad day, being able to come in and be that support to help them to get through whatever incident or emergency situation they're having," Malin said.

Applications close June 12 through the city's website under Employment Opportunities. Interviews will follow for selected candidates.
