Stockholm Hosts World's Largest Chess Lecture for 1,500

Thousands of chess enthusiasts gathered in Stockholm this weekend to witness history in the making and prove that learning can happen at any scale.

The Chess Party on April 17-18 brought together some of the biggest names in chess, including world champion Magnus Carlsen, legendary Judit Polgár, and popular streamers Andrea Botez and GothamChess. But the real stars were the 1,500 participants who showed up ready to learn, play, and break records.

The opening day's highlight was a world record attempt for the largest chess lecture ever held. Led by Polgár, Botez, and Jesper Hall, thousands of participants solved puzzles together in real time, creating a massive interactive learning experience that transformed how chess education could look at scale.

Swedish Grandmaster Nils Grandelius added extra excitement with a 12-board simultaneous exhibition using a chess clock, testing his skills against multiple opponents at once. Meanwhile, Pia and Anna Cramling hosted their own simultaneous games, welcoming players of all skill levels to test themselves against seasoned competitors.

The event made space for everyone, running parallel tournaments for seniors aged 50 and 65 and older. First-time competitors found their footing in the Friday Beginner Tournament, experiencing organized chess competition in a welcoming environment.

One of the most captivating moments came from trainer Axel Smith's blindfold simultaneous exhibition. Playing multiple games without seeing any boards, Smith demonstrated the depth of chess mastery while mesmerizing younger participants who watched in awe.

The Ripple Effect

The real impact showed in the numbers beyond the main event. A staggering 25,000 schoolchildren from 1,000 classes across Sweden participated in the youth competition that culminated with finals on April 17. The prize ceremony celebrated not just winners but the growing popularity of chess in schools nationwide.

Meet and greet sessions with Andrea Botez and Anna Cramling drew some of the biggest crowds, especially among younger fans. Children lined up for photos and selfies, connecting with role models who are making chess accessible and fun for new generations.

International chess stars Alexei Shirov and Simen Agdestein delivered masterclasses throughout the weekend. Agdestein, Norway's first Grandmaster and an early mentor to Magnus Carlsen, shared insights from decades of experience developing world-class players.

The Friday Night Blitz tournament wrapped up the opening day with fast-paced games that kept the energy high. Participants who had spent the day learning and watching got to put their skills to the test in rapid-fire matches.

Stockholm proved that chess brings people together across ages, skill levels, and backgrounds, turning an ancient game into a modern celebration of community and learning.
