Stolen 2,500-Year-Old Golden Helmet Found in Netherlands
A priceless golden helmet from ancient Romania, stolen from a Dutch museum in a dramatic heist, has been recovered after more than a year. The 2,500-year-old treasure survived the theft with only minor damage.
A treasured piece of ancient history is coming home after thieves couldn't hide one of the world's most recognizable artifacts.
Dutch authorities announced Thursday they've recovered the Coțofenești helmet, a stunning 2,500-year-old golden treasure from Romania's ancient Dacia civilization. The helmet was stolen in January 2025 during a bold break-in at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands.
Thieves struck during the final weekend of a six-month exhibition, using a homemade firework bomb and sledgehammer to smash their way inside. Security footage showed three people prying open doors with a crowbar before an explosion lit up the night.
The dramatic heist grabbed international headlines and put serious strain on Dutch-Romanian relations. Romanian Justice Minister Radu Marinescu called it "a crime against our state" and made recovery an absolute priority.
For months, experts feared the worst. The helmet's fame and distinctive studded appearance made it nearly impossible to sell, leading many to worry thieves might melt it down for the gold.

Instead, prosecutors struck a deal with three arrested suspects. On Thursday, heavily armed police in balaclavas stood guard as officials unveiled the recovered helmet at a news conference.
The Bright Side
The ancient treasure survived its ordeal remarkably well. Museum director Robert van Langh confirmed the helmet has a slight dent but will suffer no permanent damage. Two of three stolen golden armbands were also recovered in perfect condition.
"We are incredibly pleased," said prosecutor Corien Fahner. "It has been a roller coaster, especially for Romania, but also for employees of the Drents Museum."
The suspects will face trial later in April. Meanwhile, the search continues for the third missing armband.
The helmet will eventually return to Romania, where it stands as one of the nation's most revered symbols of their ancient heritage.
