Stranded Whale Timmy Swims Into Rescue Barge in Germany

A humpback whale stranded far from home just gave Germany something to celebrate after swimming into a custom rescue barge designed to carry it to safety.

The whale, affectionately named Timmy by German media, has been stuck on sandbars near Lübeck since late March. The mammal freed itself several times only to become stranded again, capturing the hearts of Germans who followed every twist of the saga.

On Tuesday, rescuers attached straps to Timmy and guided the whale down a specially dug channel toward the waiting barge near the island of Poel. After swimming slowly at first with rescuers alongside, Timmy suddenly sped up and swam directly into the water-filled transport vessel.

Cheers erupted from the rescue team and spectators watching from shore. The barge, normally used to transport boats, was converted to carry the marine mammal in its water-filled hold.

"I can't even say how happy I am," said Karin Walter-Mommert, one of two entrepreneurs financing the mission. "You could see that the whale fought and wanted to live."

The rescue almost didn't happen. In early April, officials declared Timmy couldn't be saved after multiple failed attempts to free the animal through channels dug in the sand. Public outcry convinced authorities to allow the privately funded rescue plan to move forward.

Environment Minister Till Backhaus approved the mission after veterinarians confirmed Timmy was strong enough for transport. The plan now involves taking the barge to the North Sea, where rescuers hope to release the whale if it maintains its strength.
