Stranger Gives $3K to Bronx Mom Who Lost Everything in Fire

When Scott Evans saw Nina Chambers' story on the news, he knew he had to do something about it.

Two months ago, Chambers lost nearly everything when a fire destroyed her Bronx apartment on East 160th Street in Melrose. The 36-year-old mother of three was living in a hotel, struggling to feed her children with an overdrawn bank account.

Evans, watching from Long Island, tried to deposit money directly into her TD Bank account but the bank wouldn't allow it. So he did something even better: he emailed the reporter who covered her story and asked to be connected.

This complete stranger has now given Chambers $3,000 to help buy food and school supplies for her children. He asked for nothing in return except one question: "How can I help you?"

"You don't meet people that do those type of things for nothing," Chambers said. "It's rare."

Eight weeks after the fire, Chambers' apartment is still being repaired. But her spirit has been completely transformed by Evans' generosity.

She's since secured a new apartment and graduated from school with a degree in human services. The woman who lost everything is now rebuilding with purpose.

"Scott is an angel," Chambers said. "Scott is one of those people, you don't know he's there until he shows you what he can do."

When Evans heard what she said about him, he got emotional. "I'm blessed that I can do it," he said, explaining that he and his wife have no mortgage or car payments, which allows them to help others.

The two have never met in person, though Chambers hopes that will change soon. She says Evans showed up at her greatest time of need and left an everlasting impact.

Now Chambers has a new goal: "I just want to get on my feet so I can pay it forward."
