Stranger Gives $3K to Fire Victim He Saw on TV

When Scott Evans saw Nina Chambers on the evening news standing in the ashes of her Bronx apartment, he knew he had to do something. The fire had destroyed everything she and her three children owned.

Chambers was living in a hotel on June 28th, watching her savings evaporate on replacement necessities and nightly fees. Within weeks, her TD Bank account showed an overdraft notice.

But 30 miles away in Long Island, Evans was already trying to help. He drove to a TD Bank branch and asked to deposit money directly into her account.

"You don't meet people that do those type of things for nothing," Chambers said. "It's rare."

Evans handed her $3,000 in cash. He told reporters he could afford it because he and his wife had no mortgage or car payments. "This was something I could do something about," he said. "I'm blessed that I can do it."
