Student Breaks Coach's 41-Year Track Record in Charlotte

For 41 years, a track record stood untouched at Garinger High School in Charlotte. Then senior ZaNovia Davis shaved off three-tenths of a second and made history under the guidance of the very person whose record she broke.

Davis clocked 56.1 seconds in the 400-meter dash this season, breaking the school's 1985 record of 56.4 seconds. The previous record belonged to her coach, Tanya Filmore-Scott, who set it when she was a student athlete at the same school.

The story began when Coach Filmore-Scott first encouraged Davis to try the demanding 400-meter event. Davis, a multi-sport athlete who runs cross-country and plays basketball, had never attempted the race before that conversation.

Davis spent countless extra hours training with her coach to master the challenging distance. After three years on the track team, her fierce work ethic and winning attitude finally paid off with a spot in the school record books.

This story represents more than just a broken record. Coach Filmore-Scott has dedicated her life to Garinger, working as an Exceptional Children teacher since 1990 and leading the track program since 2000.

She was inducted into the Garinger High School Hall of Fame in 2024, cementing her legacy as a cornerstone of the community. Now she gets to witness her student surpass her own achievement.

"It feels good to have the record broken on my watch," Filmore-Scott said. Her mentorship gave Davis not just athletic skills but profound confidence and a winning philosophy for life.

Davis now holds several college offers and prepares to compete at the next level. The entire Garinger community celebrates as one generation of excellence passes the torch to another.
