Student Protests Force India's Education Minister to Resign

Thousands of students celebrating in New Delhi's streets prove that peaceful protest can still change governments.

India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned Saturday after more than a month of nationwide demonstrations demanding his removal. The "Cockroach Janta Party" movement began when allegations surfaced about leaked answers to competitive entrance exams that millions of Indian students depend on for their futures.

What started as anger over test cheating grew into something bigger. Students, professionals, families and activists joined protests in cities across India, demanding not just education reform but broader government accountability and economic opportunities.

For over a month, demonstrators camped at protest sites despite police using tear gas and batons to disperse crowds. Several students were injured when police tried to stop a march toward Parliament on Monday, but the protesters refused to back down.

The government's initial response fell short. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced fast-track courts for exam fraud cases and promised new anti-cheating legislation, but protesters said these measures avoided the real issue: holding officials accountable.

Prachi Kumar, a corporate employee who joined the demonstrations, captured the movement's spirit simply. "This had to be done," she said. "Someone must be held accountable."

The Ripple Effect

The resignation represents the first major concession by Modi's government to public dissent in recent years. It sends a powerful message that sustained, peaceful activism can force change even in the world's largest democracy.

The victory extends beyond one minister's departure. The movement united people across different backgrounds around shared concerns about fairness, transparency and opportunity for young people.

Movement leaders say they're not stopping yet. They continue demanding compensation for families of students who died by suicide after exam scandals and accountability for police officers accused of excessive force during protests.

The "Cockroach" movement chose its name deliberately: small, persistent, impossible to ignore, and surprisingly powerful when they come together.
