Sudan Restores 284 Health Facilities After Conflict

After months of disruption, Sudan's capital region is rebuilding its healthcare system one clinic at a time.

Khartoum State Ministry of Health announced that 284 health facilities are now fully operational across the region's seven districts. The milestone includes 41 hospitals and 243 health centers serving communities in Greater Omdurman, Greater Bahri, and Greater Khartoum.

Dr. Fathal-Rahman Mohamed Al-Amin, the Acting Minister of Health, shared the progress during a coordination meeting in early February 2026. His team outlined urgent plans to reactivate seven specialized hospitals that provide critical care for conditions ranging from diabetes to mental health.

The specialized facilities returning to service include Khartoum Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, Taha Ba'ashar Hospital for Mental and Psychiatric Diseases, and Jabir Abu Al-Ezz Diabetes Hospital. Three more centers focus on dermatology, chest diseases, and children's diabetes treatment.

Health workers face significant challenges as they prepare these facilities. Teams are working to restore power to buildings, secure premises, clear mines from affected areas, and repair war damage. They're also replacing furniture and medical equipment lost during the conflict.

Greater Omdurman leads the recovery with 20 operational hospitals and 104 health centers. Greater Bahri follows with 12 hospitals and 34 centers, while Greater Khartoum has restored 9 hospitals. Sharq Al-Nil added 51 health centers, and Jebel Awliya contributed 31.

This healthcare restoration reaches far beyond hospital walls. Families who went months without access to mental health services, diabetes care, or pediatric treatment now have hope for consistent medical support.
