Summer Triangle Shines Over Egypt's Black Desert

Sometimes the darkest places on Earth reveal the brightest wonders in our sky. Astrophotographer Osama Fathi just captured a gorgeous view of the Milky Way glowing over Egypt's Black Desert, with three brilliant stars forming a perfect triangle above the ancient volcanic landscape.

The image, taken on December 20, shows the Summer Triangle shining against the dense starfield of our galaxy. Three stars create this famous pattern: Deneb (representing the tail of Cygnus the swan), Vega (a past and future North Star), and Altair (the brightest star in Aquila the eagle).

Fathi chose the Black Desert specifically for its exceptional viewing conditions. The remote location offers extremely low light pollution and dry atmospheric air, creating high contrast between the Milky Way's bright core and the surrounding stars.

The photographer used a modified Nikon Z6 camera with a six-minute exposure to capture the scene. He photographed the desert foreground using only natural starlight, preserving the subtle textures of the ancient geological formations without any artificial illumination.
