Japan's centuries-old sumo wrestling tradition is winning hearts around the world, with roughly 2,000 foreign fans now filling Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan arena every single day of tournament season.

The sport's popularity surge is hard to miss. Last year marked the second consecutive year that tickets for all 90 days of matches sold out completely. When sumo returned to London in October for its first overseas tournament in two decades, 27,000 fans packed five sold-out shows.

A 44-year-old visitor from Oregon traveled to Japan specifically to watch sumo, drawn by its long history and ceremonial traditions. A 39-year-old Norwegian tourist called attending a match "a once-in-a-lifetime experience" after struggling to secure tickets through normal channels.

Tokyo tour operators are responding to the demand. Specialized sumo viewing tours now guide foreign visitors through proper etiquette and explain the sport's deep cultural roots. Groups meet near Ryogoku Station before heading to the 11,000-capacity arena, where the Japan Sumo Association estimates international visitors make up nearly 20% of daily attendance.

The experience extends beyond tournaments. The Arashio stable in Chuo Ward has become an unexpected tourist destination by opening its morning training sessions to public viewing through full-glass windows. About 50 visitors gathered there on a recent December morning to watch wrestlers practice.

This cultural exchange flows both ways. Arashio stablemaster, a former wrestler himself, tells his current athletes that their dedication is inspiring people from around the globe. "I tell the wrestlers that you are being watched more than you think," he explained, noting his gratitude for the international interest.

The wrestlers train in unheated stables during winter months, maintaining the sport's traditional Spartan approach. Foreign visitors witness this discipline firsthand, gaining respect for the commitment required to compete at sumo's highest levels.
