Surf coach Lucas Taub diving into ocean water to rescue father and daughter from rip current

Surf Coach Saves 6-Year-Old From California Rip Current

🦸 Hero Alert

A university surf coach jumped fully clothed into the ocean to rescue a father and his 6-year-old daughter being swept away by a powerful rip current. His split-second decision saved two lives and reminded everyone what true leadership looks like.

Lucas Taub was coaching at a surf competition in Oceanside, California, when he spotted something that made his heart stop: a little girl bobbing up and down in the water, swallowing gulps of seawater as a rip current pulled her farther from shore.

The Westcliff University surf team coach didn't waste a second. He ran backwards, kicked off his shoes, yanked his phone from his pocket, and dove headfirst into the Pacific Ocean on March 15.

In the water, 6-year-old Coco Greene was already in over her head. Her father Chris, a lifelong surfer familiar with these very waters, had tried to reach her but was completely exhausted by the time he got there.

"I honestly didn't think I was gonna make it," Chris told ABC News, his voice cracking with emotion. "I was too far away, and she was already in over her head."

Then Chris looked up and saw Taub swimming toward them. "Once he got to us, I knew we were good," he said.

Bystander video captured the entire rescue, showing Taub cutting through the waves and guiding both father and daughter safely back to shore. Chris suspects Coco had been playing in low-tide water when the current suddenly swept her out to sea.

Why This Inspires

Taub usually coaches from the beach, but that day he happened to be walking along the jetty. He calls it being in the right place at the right time, but his instincts came from years of working with young surfers.

"I had one job in mind, and that job was to bring those human beings to safety," Taub said. "Especially being a surf coach and working with the youth, it was a no-brainer."

Chris Greene, a father of four, calls Taub an "awesome human being" and an angel to his family. Westcliff University President Dr. Anthony Lee put it perfectly: "Lucas did more than serve as a coach. He brought our values to life in the most meaningful way."

Sometimes heroism isn't about having superpowers but simply about paying attention and choosing to act when seconds matter most.
