Survivor's Courage Drives 73% Spike in Hotline Calls
Thousands of sexual assault survivors are finding the strength to reach out for help after following Jane Doe's story. In just one week, calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline jumped 73%, with some days seeing double the normal volume.
A single survivor's courage is helping thousands of others take their first steps toward healing.
After Jane Doe's story about sexual assault at Cornell became public, calls to the National Sexual Assault Hotline surged 73% over the past week. Yesterday alone, the hotline received more than double its typical call volume.
Many survivors calling the hotline say they were directly inspired by Jane Doe's decision to come forward. For some, it's the first time they've ever shared their story with anyone.
"The increase in calls to the hotline shows what an impact this story, and this survivor, is having on people across the country," said Megan Cutter, chief of victim services for RAINN, which operates the hotline. "Because of Jane Doe, more people are reaching out, telling their story and finding support for the first time."
RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. The organization provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Scott Berkowitz, RAINN's president, expressed gratitude for Jane Doe's bravery. "We admire, and are so grateful for, Jane Doe's courage. RAINN stands with her, as do millions of survivors and supporters across the country."
The Ripple Effect
Jane Doe's decision to speak out is creating waves of healing across the country. Each call to the hotline represents someone choosing hope over silence, support over isolation.
The increased awareness has also led to a surge in donations to keep the hotline free and accessible to everyone who needs it. These contributions ensure that no survivor ever faces a busy signal or paywall when reaching out for help.
Survivors can access support by calling 800-656-HOPE, chatting at RAINN.org, or texting "HOPE" to 64673. All services are completely free and confidential, available in both English and Spanish.
One person's courage is lighting the way for thousands to find their own.
