Sweden Backs €21M Clean Aviation Fuel Plant

Imagine flying across Europe without adding a single ton of CO2 to the atmosphere. That dream just moved closer to reality in a small Swedish port town.

SkyKraft, a partnership between sustainable fuel pioneer SkyNRG and Swedish utility Skelleftea Kraft, has secured €21 million from Sweden's Energy Agency to develop a revolutionary aviation fuel plant. The facility will transform renewable electricity and captured carbon into clean jet fuel at the Port of Skellefteå.

The funding comes through Industriklivet, Sweden's ambitious climate initiative backed by Next Generation EU. This isn't just seed money for a far-off concept. The grant will fund detailed design and engineering work needed to make a final investment decision in 2027.

Once operational, the plant will produce 130,000 metric tons of electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) every year. That's enough to fuel thousands of commercial flights without drilling for a drop of oil.

The timing couldn't be better. While many clean fuel projects have struggled to find financing lately, aviation is different. New European regulations now require airlines to use sustainable fuel, creating guaranteed demand for products like eSAF.

The Ripple Effect

This facility represents more than just one plant in one Swedish town. SkyNRG is already building similar projects across the globe, with a major plant in the Netherlands that secured funding earlier this year and another underway in the United States.

Together, these facilities are proving that sustainable aviation isn't just possible. It's becoming practical and profitable. Sweden's Industriklivet program has been backing these kinds of breakthrough projects since 2018, supporting everything from hydrogen production to carbon capture.

For the Port of Skellefteå, this means new jobs and economic growth powered entirely by clean technology. For travelers worldwide, it means guilt-free flying may soon become the norm rather than the exception.

The aviation industry accounts for roughly 2-3% of global carbon emissions, a number that's been climbing as more people take to the skies. Solutions like eSAF could help reverse that trend without grounding a single plane.

By using renewable electricity and biogenic CO2 (carbon already in the natural cycle), the process essentially recycles carbon instead of adding new emissions. It's the kind of circular economy thinking that could transform multiple industries beyond aviation.
