Sweden Gets €1.4B Green Steel Plant, Fossil-Free by 2026

The steel industry just took its biggest leap toward a clean future. Swedish company Stegra closed a massive €1.4 billion funding round to complete construction of the world's first commercial-scale green steel plant in Boden, Sweden.

Traditional steel production accounts for about 8% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the planet's dirtiest industries. Stegra's revolutionary approach replaces coal with green hydrogen, slashing emissions to near zero.

The Boden facility will produce 2.5 million tonnes of green steel annually starting in 2026. That's enough to build roughly 2.5 million cars without the massive carbon footprint of conventional steelmaking.
