Swedish Electric Ferry Glides Above Waves in Near Silence

Imagine stepping off a plane only to endure a loud, wave-slamming speedboat for the final leg of your coastal journey. Swedish boat maker Candela just made that miserable experience obsolete.

The company unveiled its P-12 Business, an electric ferry that doesn't plow through waves but glides above them. Using computer-controlled underwater wings called hydrofoils, the vessel lifts its hull above the surface and essentially flies over the water.

The difference is dramatic. Traditional speedboats roar at 85 to 90 decibels, roughly as loud as a lawnmower. The P-12 Business hums along at just 63 decibels while traveling at top speed, quieter than most trains and even first-class airline cabins.

That silence comes from eliminating the constant battle against waves. Once the hydrofoils lift the boat, drag drops dramatically, cutting energy use by up to 80% compared to conventional vessels. The result is a 40-nautical-mile range at 25 knots, making it one of the longest-range electric boats in its class.

Passengers enjoy plush seating, WiFi, USB-C charging, and a coffee bar. But the real luxury is the ride itself: no engine roar, no vibration, just smooth forward motion above the water.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits extend beyond passenger comfort. Reduced underwater noise and minimal wake mean less disruption to marine life and fragile ecosystems like coral reefs. In places where diesel-powered boats currently churn through sensitive waters multiple times daily, switching to quiet electric vessels could give marine animals much-needed relief.

The technology is already proving itself globally. Stockholm adopted earlier P-12 ferries for its public transit system, and the Business version is heading to the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, and India for resort transfers and urban commuting routes.

Candela is showing that premium travel doesn't require premium pollution. By rethinking how boats move through water rather than just swapping fuel for batteries, they've created something that's efficient, quiet, and genuinely enjoyable to ride.

The days of white-knuckle speedboat transfers and smelly diesel ferries are finally coming to an end.
