Swedish Man Rescues Orphaned Otter Who Visits Him for Cuddles
A former pilot in Sweden saved a dying baby otter and raised her to thrive in the wild. Two years later, she still swims to his kayak for snuggles and snacks.
When Mats Janzon heard soft peeping sounds during a walk near his Swedish home, he discovered a tiny otter pup alone in the grass. Her mother had been killed on a nearby road, and the baby was starving and barely breathing.
Janzon had recently left his career as a pilot to focus on wildlife rescue. He'd cared for injured birds before, including a crow named Huginn who stayed with him for three years, but never an otter.
He named her Leya and cared for her around the clock. She cried when he left the room and curled up in his lap to feel safe, and the first time she let him pet her, he thought it couldn't be real.
Janzon knew Leya couldn't stay indoors forever. He started teaching her to swim in a plastic kiddie pool in his backyard, and though she was awkward at first, she grew more confident each day.
Leya followed him everywhere and became part of his family, playing hide and seek with his rescued crow and cat. Janzon says it felt like something out of a children's storybook.

When Leya was ready, Janzon took her to the lake. She looked up at him as if asking "What now?" and he nodded. She jumped in, and he realized he'd become her father.
As Leya grew, so did her wild instincts. She began wandering farther and staying out longer, and Janzon knew it was time to let her live the life she was meant for. He describes the feeling as "part pride, part heartbreak."
Sunny's Take
Leya started staying away for days at a time, but the bond remained. When Janzon goes out for morning kayak rides, her nose pops out of the water and she swims straight to him, climbing into his kayak for cuddles and a ride.
Sometimes she brings a fresh fish snack with her. Other times she returns after nearly a week in the wild, tired and ready for comfort from the human who saved her life.
Janzon says Leya is an old soul full of energy and positivity who inspired him during his transition from a conventional career to a life focused on helping all living beings. She chooses to visit him, and that choice means everything.
The internet has fallen in love with their story, with viewers calling Leya his "significant otter" and wishing the whole world could be this peaceful.
