Jono Ridler emerges from Wellington Harbor surrounded by cheering crowd after completing 850-mile ocean swim

Swimmer Completes 850-Mile Ocean Journey to Save Seafloor

🦸 Hero Alert

Jono Ridler just finished a 90-day, 1,367-kilometer swim down New Zealand's entire coastline to protest destructive fishing practices. The 36-year-old's epic journey has rallied more than 67,000 people to demand protection for ocean ecosystems. #

A crowd erupted in cheers as Jono Ridler emerged from Wellington Harbor after swimming the length of New Zealand—a journey that took three months and covered more than 850 miles.

The 36-year-old West Auckland man completed his "Swim4TheOcean" on Saturday, finishing a quest he started at the country's northernmost point on January 5. He spent more than 468 hours in the water, wearing only swim trunks, goggles, and a cap.

Ridler's mission wasn't about breaking records. It was about saving the seafloor from bottom trawling, a fishing method that drags heavy nets across the ocean floor to catch fish.

The practice destroys deep-sea corals that take centuries to grow and kills countless sea turtles, juvenile fish, and other marine life caught accidentally in the nets. Scientists say some seafloor ecosystems never recover from the damage.

"I wouldn't trade any of it for a second," Ridler said after kissing the ground at Whairepo Lagoon. Even in his exhaustion, he spotted an eagle ray and sea star in the shallow water, reminding him why he endured jellyfish stings, freezing temperatures, brutal winds, and muscle pain for 90 days.

The swimmer partnered with LiveOcean, a conservation group founded by champion sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. Together, they've collected 67,464 signatures on a petition asking New Zealand's government to ban bottom trawling by the end of 2027.

Ridler took more than 120 rest stops between swim shifts, battling adverse currents and fatigue. His support team documented moments when he nearly broke down from the physical toll, but he kept going.

The Ripple Effect

Ridler's journey has become a rallying point for ocean protection across New Zealand. Thousands of people followed his progress online, and the petition continues to gain signatures daily.

He and LiveOcean will formally present the petition to Parliament on April 29, turning three months of physical endurance into political pressure. Communities along the coast came out to cheer him on during rest stops, many learning about bottom trawling's impact for the first time.

"I hope that for everybody who was there, everybody watching from afar, that this is a moment they remember for life," Ridler said. He wiped away tears as he addressed supporters, already planning his next advocacy steps.

As he stood on shore for the first time in months, Ridler made one thing clear: the swim might be over, but the fight for healthy oceans is just beginning.
