Swiss Runner Breaks 43-Year Barrier in Women's 800m

For 43 years, no woman had broken 1:54 in the 800-meter run. Then Audrey Werro shattered that barrier twice in three weeks.

The 22-year-old Swiss runner clocked 1:53.98 in Stockholm on June 7, stunning competitors and track fans worldwide. She became the third-fastest woman ever, skipping past the 1:55s and 1:54s entirely in one breathtaking race.

Three weeks later in Paris, she ran even faster at 1:53.80. Between those two races, she also posted a 1:54.45 victory in Ostrava, making June a month for the history books.

What makes Werro's story even more remarkable is where she comes from. She trains at CA Belfaux, a small regional track club in Switzerland where she's been since age 9.

Her coach, Berset Nuoffer, combined coaching with working as a part-time schoolteacher until last year. Just two years ago, Nuoffer told Swiss newspapers that even making the Olympics was "not even a dream" for them.

Werro only became a full-time professional athlete about a year ago. Until last summer, she was still in school, balancing her studies with training.

Now she's chasing Jarmila Kratochvílová's world record of 1:53.28, set in July 1983. In Paris, Werro's race was specifically designed as a world record attempt, and though she missed it by half a second, the signs point to more speed ahead.

She closed her Paris race with a blistering 28.53 final 200 meters despite running without much competition. With better pacing and stronger rivals pushing her, that record looks reachable.

Werro has announced her next 800-meter race will be at the European Championships in Birmingham this August, which she calls "the best case for a world record to be achieved." After 40 years of waiting, the running world finally has reason to believe that barrier will fall.
