Swiss Runner Eyes 43-Year 800m World Record

A young Swiss runner is racing toward one of athletics' most legendary barriers, and she's confident she'll break through.

Audrey Werro, the newly crowned European 800m champion, has set her sights on Jarmila Kratochvilova's 43-year-old world record of 1:53.28. In June, Werro clocked 1:53.80 in Paris, landing her third on the all-time list and proving the record might finally be within reach.

"Things have happened really fast," said Werro ahead of Thursday's Diamond League meeting in Zurich. "I was not prepared for a world record this year, but I think with this mentality the world record will fall one day."

What makes Werro's journey so remarkable is her steady, persistent climb. The 22-year-old has improved her personal best in each of her last eight seasons, showing the kind of consistency that builds champions.

This year alone, she's registered three of the 10 fastest times in history. She even upset Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson to claim gold at the European Championships in Birmingham earlier this month.

Werro credits her breakthrough to a major life change. "The biggest difference this year was that I finished university one year ago," she explained. "Now I'm just focused on athletics and I just have more time for the competition, the training, the recovery, everything."

Her trademark celebration features outstretched claws, mimicking a lion. It honors her father's advice to channel the spirit of a lion on the track after he noticed she was too timid in childhood races.
