Women's residential rehabilitation center Guthrie House in Sydney's inner west neighborhood

Sydney Rehab Helps Moms Rebuild Lives After Addiction

✨ Faith Restored

A Sydney rehabilitation center is helping women avoid jail and keep their children while recovering from addiction. Guthrie House offers a rare safe space for mothers facing legal troubles to get back on track.

Emma knows exactly where she'd be without Guthrie House: behind bars, separated from her two children, still trapped in the cycle of addiction that nearly destroyed her life.

Instead, she's one of 10 women living at a residential rehabilitation center in Sydney's inner west that specializes in helping women involved in the criminal justice system rebuild their futures. Her children visit regularly, giving her something many similar programs can't offer: the chance to recover while staying connected to family.

Guthrie House stands out in New South Wales for accepting mothers with their children, pregnant women, and those facing court proceedings. The 12-week program allows up to three children to live on-site with their mothers, filling a critical gap in the state's rehabilitation network.

"This is where I need to be for my recovery," Emma said. "I'd still be in jail, and if I wasn't in jail I'd be struggling."

Executive director Christine Duggan said the center prioritizes women who would otherwise lose custody of their children or return to jail. The program takes an abstinence-based approach while treating setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failure.

The Ripple Effect

Guthrie House represents more than individual success stories. It's part of a broader movement addressing gaps in Australia's addiction treatment system, particularly for women navigating both substance abuse and the criminal justice system.

The waitlist currently sits at six weeks, but demand continues growing across New South Wales. Robert Stirling, chief executive of the Network of Alcohol and Other Drug Agencies, said thousands wait for treatment on any given day across the state.

"The worst-case scenario is that people die while they're trying to wait to access treatment," Stirling said. He emphasized that when someone is ready to address their addiction, immediate access matters because motivation can quickly fade.

The 2024 NSW Drug Summit produced over 50 recommendations to strengthen support services. The state government supported 36 of them, including five-year grant agreements that give organizations like Guthrie House more stability to plan and serve their communities.

NSW Health currently allocates approximately $90 million annually to non-government organizations delivering alcohol and drug services, part of a broader $610 million investment in addiction programs. Advocates continue pushing for an additional $13 million per year to meet growing demand.

For Emma, completing her second round at Guthrie House means building the foundation for a different future, one where she can be the mother her children deserve.
