Syrian Fighters Begin Reconciliation in Deir ez-Zor

Former fighters in northeastern Syria are laying down their weapons as part of a new reconciliation program designed to heal communities torn by years of conflict.

Ahmed al-Jarjis, 25, arrived at a reconciliation center in Deir ez-Zor on January 26 to turn in his rifle. He had served with the Syrian Democratic Forces, a group dominated by Kurdish fighters that once controlled the region. Now, Syrian authorities are inviting former combatants to complete a reconciliation process and reintegrate into civilian life.

At the entrance to the center, guards photographed al-Jarjis as he handed over his weapon. They shared the image on social media to encourage other former fighters who hadn't yet come forward. Al-Jarjis willingly participated, hoping his example would reassure others. "The fighters are afraid of being arrested if they come," he explained. "People like me, who have completed the reconciliation process, will reassure them. We are treated well."

The program launched after Damascus regained control of the predominantly Arab province in northeastern Syria. It mirrors a similar reconciliation procedure that successfully processed soldiers and officers from the former regime after dictator Bashar al-Assad's fall in December 2024.
