Taiwan's 500 MW Wind Farm Nears Completion

Taiwan just completed a massive underwater engineering feat that will power half a million homes with clean energy. Two enormous export cables, stretching 45 and 44 kilometers each, now rest on the ocean floor off the coast of Taichung, ready to channel wind power from sea to shore.

The cables weigh more than 8,000 tonnes combined and represent a critical milestone for the Fengmiao I offshore wind farm. Located 35 kilometers offshore, the wind farm will generate 500 megawatts of electricity once fully operational.

Installation teams used the specialized cable laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh to transport and position the cables on the seabed. The next phase involves burying them underground using a trencher called PT 1, protecting them from ocean currents and marine traffic.

The cables are currently in "wet storage" while crews wait for the offshore substation platform to arrive. Once ready, workers will pull the cables into the platform and complete the final connections that will allow electricity to flow.

The Ripple Effect

Fengmiao I is just the beginning. The project is part of a larger Fengmiao development with a total planned capacity of 1,800 megawatts, enough to power roughly 1.8 million households with clean, renewable energy.

Taiwan has committed to aggressive renewable energy targets as part of its transition away from fossil fuels. Offshore wind farms like Fengmiao represent a crucial piece of that puzzle, taking advantage of the strong winds that sweep across the Taiwan Strait.

The successful installation demonstrates how infrastructure investments today create the foundation for cleaner air tomorrow. Each megawatt of wind capacity means less reliance on coal and natural gas, reducing carbon emissions while providing stable, predictable power to homes and businesses.
