Tajikistan Religious Groups Give $1M After Earthquake

When an earthquake destroyed hundreds of homes in Tajikistan this April, religious communities across the country opened their doors and their wallets to help families rebuild.

More than 4,000 registered religious organizations in Tajikistan collectively donated 11.22 million somoni (about $1 million) in charitable assistance throughout 2025. The funds supported orphans, people with disabilities, low-income families, and disaster victims.

The earthquake that struck the Rasht and Tojikobod districts on April 13 killed one person and injured 16 others. The disaster destroyed 67 homes completely and damaged hundreds more, affecting 1,331 families and causing over $1.6 million in total damage.

Religious groups quickly responded with 220,000 somoni specifically for earthquake relief, providing construction materials and basic necessities to families who lost everything. Schools, medical centers, power lines, and water systems also suffered significant damage in the quake.

By November, authorities announced that all damaged homes had been rebuilt and returned to their owners. The swift reconstruction gave displaced families a place to call home again before winter arrived.

The Ripple Effect

This charitable response reaches far beyond earthquake relief. Religious organizations directed the majority of their donations toward ongoing support for Tajikistan's most vulnerable residents.

Over 11 million somoni went to material and financial assistance for orphans, people with disabilities, individuals without guardians, and disadvantaged families. These donations provide steady support that helps fill gaps in social services.

The collective giving demonstrates how community organizations can mobilize quickly when disaster strikes while maintaining long-term commitments to those who need help year-round. Faith communities are using their networks and resources to create real change in people's lives.
