Tallahassee Opens First EV Station on Earth Day

Tallahassee turned Earth Day into action on April 22, cutting the ribbon on its first flagship electric vehicle charging station right next to Florida A&M University.

The new station sits within walking distance of Cascades Park and Anita Favors Plaza, giving EV drivers pleasant spots to visit while their cars charge. City officials, including Mayor John Dailey and community members, gathered at the intersection of South Adams Street and West Van Buren Street to celebrate the milestone.

The timing wasn't random. Opening on Earth Day highlights the city's commitment to its Clean Energy Resolution, which aims to transition Tallahassee to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2050.

The project came together in just nine months, and two more charging stations are already planned. One will sit across from the Southside Transit Center at Orange-Meridian Park, while another is headed to West Tharpe Street near North MLK Boulevard.

The Ripple Effect

What makes this story special isn't just the infrastructure. During construction, the crew faced a problem with noisy generators disrupting the neighborhood.

Local business owner George Petrandis owns the building behind the charging station and has solar panels installed. When he heard about the noise issue, he offered to let the construction crew tie into his solar power system so they could work quietly.

Mayor Dailey shared the story at the ribbon cutting, calling Petrandis "an incredible community partner" and adding, "that's what Tallahassee is all about." The moment shows how private citizens and public projects can work together to build sustainable solutions that benefit everyone.

The charging station represents more than just a place to power up electric vehicles. It's proof that cities can take concrete steps toward environmental goals while bringing people together around shared values.
