Tanzania Hospital Launches Robotic Surgery to Cut Overseas Care

Thousands of Tanzanians who once faced long journeys abroad for specialized surgery will soon find cutting-edge care right at home.

The Muhimbili Orthopaedic and Neurological Institute in Dar es Salaam just announced a groundbreaking expansion bringing robotic surgery to the country for the first time. Patients needing complex hip, knee, and spine procedures will no longer need to travel overseas or join years-long waiting lists.

Ambassador Dr. Mpoki Ulisubisya, the institute's executive director, unveiled the ambitious program during MOI's 30th anniversary celebration. The rollout includes robotic-assisted joint replacements, a bone bank for transplants, and advanced treatments for severe spinal disorders and mobility conditions in both adults and children.

For families who've struggled with the financial and emotional burden of overseas medical referrals, the change is transformative. Many Tanzanians have sold property or borrowed heavily to afford treatment abroad, only to face months away from home and familiar support systems.

The institute isn't stopping at the capital city. MOI is sending specialist teams to regions including Arusha, Mara, Ruvuma, Kagera, and Njombe, bringing advanced care closer to rural communities. Mobile clinics will continue reaching remote areas where patients previously traveled hundreds of miles to access basic orthopedic services.

The Ripple Effect

This shift represents more than just medical advancement for one country. As MOI positions itself as a regional leader in orthopedic and neurological care, patients from neighboring African nations may soon find world-class treatment closer than Europe or Asia.

The program addresses a chronic challenge across developing nations where specialized care remains concentrated in wealthy countries. By building local expertise and investing in high-tech equipment, Tanzania is creating a model other nations can follow.

Dr. Mpoki emphasized that many of these procedures are currently available in only a handful of specialized centers worldwide. Bringing that level of precision medicine into Tanzania's public health system democratizes access in ways that seemed impossible just a decade ago.

The expansion will also reduce pressure on MOI's main hospital, where waiting times have stretched months for some procedures. Shorter waits mean less pain, faster recovery, and patients returning to work and family sooner.
