A mining company's anti-malaria campaign just covered 44,000 households in Tanzania, creating 95 jobs while fighting one of the nation's deadliest diseases. The Zero Malaria initiative combines spraying, free mosquito nets, and health education to protect entire communities.

Forty-four thousand families in Tanzania's Shinyanga Region can now sleep safer, thanks to a mining company taking on one of Africa's most persistent health threats.

Barrick Bulyanhulu Mine just completed its annual Zero Malaria campaign in Msalala District, spraying homes and mosquito breeding sites across the Bugarama and Bulyanhulu wards. The effort partnered with local government to reach communities surrounding the mine operations.

Malaria remains one of Tanzania's leading killers, hitting mothers and children hardest. Indoor residual spraying eliminates mosquitoes and destroys their breeding grounds before they can spread the disease.

"Health is a crucial issue in any society," said Zuwena Senkondo, the mine's Community Relations Officer. "That is why Barrick Bulyanhulu has launched this campaign to eliminate the dangerous malaria disease and reduce deaths among mothers and children."

The program goes beyond just spraying. Families receive free insecticide-treated mosquito nets, health education, and regular screenings to catch infections early.

The Ripple Effect

Ninety-five young people earned temporary jobs carrying out the spraying work through contractor Gekahil Inter-Trade Ltd. That's 95 paychecks supporting families while protecting an entire region from disease.

The campaign operates under the motto "Zero Malaria Starts with Me, You, and All of Us," reflecting how community-wide participation makes prevention possible. When private companies partner with local government on public health, entire districts benefit from resources that might otherwise be unavailable.

Barrick has committed to continuing its support for government health initiatives in mining communities. The company's broader investment program also funds education and social development projects across the region.

District officials confirmed the campaign successfully reached all targeted households in both wards. Now 44,000 families can focus on work, school, and daily life without the constant threat of malaria lurking in their homes.
