Tanzania Turns Organic Waste Into Fertilizer for Farmers

Tanzania is opening its doors to a game-changing technology that turns yesterday's trash into tomorrow's crop fertilizer.

The Tanzanian government is actively seeking investors to fund organic waste recycling projects across the country. Deputy Minister Reuben Kwagilwa recently met with representatives from Biotech 22 Ltd, a Bulgarian company specializing in converting food scraps and organic waste into raw materials for fertilizer production.

The proposal comes at a perfect time for Tanzania. Urban centers are struggling with mounting piles of organic waste in residential areas, and farmers need affordable fertilizer to boost crop yields.

The technology works by processing organic waste through advanced recycling systems that extract valuable nutrients. These nutrients then become the building blocks for agricultural fertilizers, creating a closed loop where nothing goes to waste.

Kwagilwa praised the initiative for tackling two problems at once. Cities get cleaner streets and healthier environments, while farmers gain access to locally produced fertilizer that could lower costs and increase food production.

The project fits into Tanzania's broader push toward a circular economy, where resources cycle through productive uses instead of ending up in landfills. This approach not only protects the environment but also creates new business opportunities in green technology and agriculture sectors.

Similar projects in other countries have shown remarkable results, with some cities diverting up to 60% of their organic waste from landfills. If Tanzania achieves even a fraction of that success, millions of tons of waste could find productive new life as crop fertilizer.
