Tasmania Cuts Water Bill Hike from $91 to $54

Tasmanian families can breathe easier after their economic regulator slashed a proposed water bill increase by more than half. What could have been a $91 annual jump will now be just $54 for the average household starting in the 2026-27 financial year.

TasWater, the state's water and sewerage authority, had requested an 8.8 percent annual increase over four years to fund major infrastructure upgrades. Economic Regulator Joe Dimasi said no, approving just 4.3 percent instead.

Small businesses got an even bigger break. Their proposed $251 annual increase dropped to $112, offering real relief during tough economic times.

The regulator didn't dismiss TasWater's infrastructure needs. The company has aging water systems that need attention, with only 9 percent of treatment plants meeting all environmental license conditions. Projects like upgrades to Hobart's Ridgeway Dam and Pet Dam at Burnie are genuinely necessary.

But Dimasi said TasWater's ambitious $1.7 billion capital works program over four years wasn't realistic. Spreading the work over a longer period makes more financial sense for families.

TasWater CFO Kane Ingham acknowledged the decision while noting risks of delaying projects. Older infrastructure means higher failure risks, and postponed projects often cost more later. The company will assess what the pricing decision means for their upgrade timeline.
