Yellow stray dog "Stationmaster Huang" being held gently by taxi driver at Xuancheng Railway Station

Taxi Drivers Raise $1,470 to Save Beloved Stray Dog

✨ Faith Restored

When a stray dog who befriended taxi drivers in China was hit by a car, the drivers pooled their money to save her life. Their compassion sparked a viral movement that brought an entire city together.

A stray dog known as "Stationmaster Huang" spent a year greeting taxi drivers at Xuancheng Railway Station in eastern China, and when she was hit by a car, those same drivers refused to let her die alone.

For months, the yellow dog had been a fixture at the station in Anhui province. Drivers would feed her bread and sausages between fares, and she learned to recognize their taxis, wagging her tail without the wariness most strays show strangers.

"She seemed to know exactly how to interact with people," said He Wei, one of the drivers. "Maybe, in her eyes, the taxi drivers were her family."

When Huang needed to be spayed, the drivers pooled money for the operation. But in April 2026, a car struck her, leaving her with multiple fractures and unable to move.

The surgery would cost more than $1,470. The drivers scraped together what they could and called local animal rescuers Huaba and Qingtian for help.

When the rescuers arrived, one driver gently lifted Huang from the grass while another handed them a crumpled paper listing donations alongside taxi plate numbers. Huaba was stunned.

"I've never encountered a situation like this in all my years of animal rescue," he said. "Everyone genuinely wanted to help the dog."

The Ripple Effect

The drivers' fundraising carried extra weight in an industry facing economic strain. China now has over 7 million ride-hailing drivers competing for fewer fares, with many cities warning of market saturation.

Yet these drivers chose compassion over profit. When the animal hospital learned Huang's story, they waived the remaining costs.

Huaba shared the rescue video on Douyin, where it gained over 370,000 likes and was reposted by state broadcaster CCTV. Visitors flocked to Xuancheng during the May Day holiday to see standees featuring Huang's image at tourist sites.

He Wei made small figurines of "Stationmaster Huang" as thank-you gifts for everyone who helped save her life.

The surgery succeeded, and doctors expect Huang to recover about 80% of her running ability. But her future remains uncertain as rescuers worry some potential adopters want to exploit her fame.

"Personally, I hope 'Stationmaster Huang' can find a normal home and be adopted into a real family," Huaba said, "rather than being treated as a landmark dog put on display."
