Taylor Heise's Gold Medal Win Boosts Women's Hockey

Taylor Heise skated as fast as she could toward the bench after passing the puck to teammate Megan Keller in overtime, and by the time she looked back, the celebration had already started. Team USA had just won Olympic gold in women's hockey for the first time since 2018.

"It definitely was relief," Heise told Fox News Digital on Saturday. "Relief in the fact that we were done and we finally finished the job and climbed Mount Everest."

The victory in Milan marked only the third gold medal in Team USA women's hockey history. The Americans defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime after 22 days of competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

For Heise, the most powerful moment came during the medal ceremony. Hearing "The Star-Spangled Banner" play reminded her why she laces up her skates every day.

"Playing for your country and the pride of the place that you live in is pretty amazing," she said. "To wear that USA emblem on your chest every day, it's something that you don't want to take for granted."

The messages from fans and former players back home became one of her favorite parts of the experience. The support showed that people recognized both the talent and joy the team brought to the ice.

The Ripple Effect

Now Heise is looking forward to bringing millions of new fans with her back to professional hockey. She'll return to the ice March 1 with the Professional Women's Hockey League's Minnesota Frost, where she plays alongside five other Team USA gold medalists.

The gold medal game drew 7.7 million viewers, a massive audience for women's hockey. Heise believes many of those viewers didn't know a professional league existed until they watched the Olympics.

"I just think it's pretty special because I think we gained a lot of new fans," she said. The PWHL is following a path similar to the WNBA's growth, building steadily through consistent play and expanding reach.

While Heise joked that she'd prefer a week off in Mexico, she's genuinely excited to return to professional play. The six-team league continues expanding, and she expects more fans to show up at games now that they've discovered the sport.

The gold medal will live in her memory forever, but the real victory might be the doors it opens for women's hockey moving forward.
