Teacher Challenges 10-Year-Old to Find Duran Duran. She Does.
A Dallas teacher jokingly told her student heading to London to "find Duran Duran." The fourth-grader knocked on Simon LeBon's door and actually met him.
When Miriam Osborne told her 10-year-old student to "find Duran Duran" during a trip to London, she never expected Ava Meyers to take her seriously.
But that's exactly what happened over Christmas break, turning a hallway joke into the most epic show-and-tell story ever.
Osborne teaches fourth-grade language arts at White Rock Elementary in Dallas, where her classroom features Duran Duran dolls and even an old telephone in case lead singer Simon LeBon calls. Her 43-year fandom runs deep, connecting back to childhood days in El Paso when she'd travel across town to buy British records with her babysitting money.
When Ava left early for Christmas break to attend a family wedding in the U.K., Osborne playfully challenged her to find the iconic '80s band. Ava's mom Zahara thought a walk past LeBon's Putney neighborhood home might be fun, but Ava and her 83-year-old relative Nick had bigger plans.
They walked right up to the front door and knocked.

LeBon's son-in-law answered, followed by his daughter, who agreed to get her famous father "because it was Christmas." Moments later, the "Hungry Like the Wolf" singer appeared in the doorway, warmly greeting Ava and her family and posing for pictures.
"It was just crazy," Ava said.
Back in Dallas, Osborne could barely contain her excitement when the photo arrived via text. She shared it with friends and had Ava recount the story to classmates after winter break.
Sunny's Take
For Osborne, Duran Duran represents more than just music. As the daughter of a Syrian immigrant who struggled to fit in during the '80s, the band helped her find her identity and connect with lifelong friends.
She brings that same philosophy to her classroom. "Music is a connector, and it connected me to a world that I didn't always fit in as a child," Osborne explained. "Everybody has a story, and there's something really incredible about hearing something and it taking you to a happy moment."
The encounter inspired Ava to start taking guitar lessons. Perhaps one day, a teacher will send a student searching for her.
Meanwhile, Duran Duran's core members continue touring nearly 50 years after forming in 1978, proving that good music and kind gestures never go out of style.
