Team GB Takes Double Gold at European Championships

The British swim teams kicked off the European Aquatics Championships in Paris with a splash, claiming gold in both the men's and women's 4x200m freestyle relays on opening day.

James Guy, Duncan Scott, Matt Richards and Belfast's Jack McMillan touched the wall first in the men's relay, finishing in 7:01.52. France and Germany followed behind as the British quartet powered through the final stretch.

The women's team matched their success just hours later. Freya Anderson, Leah Schlosshan, Abbie Wood and Freya Colbert dominated their race with a winning time of 7:45.93, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of Hungary.

Max Litchfield rounded out the medal haul with a bronze in the men's 400m individual medley, touching in 4:11.58.

The Ripple Effect

The championships are proving to be a breakout moment for swimmers beyond Team GB too. Jack Kelly, a 23-year-old New Yorker swimming for Ireland through his mother's heritage, smashed the Irish 100m breaststroke record not once but twice on Monday.

Kelly first broke Darragh Greene's record in the morning heats with a 59.27, then pushed even harder in the semifinals. His 58.90 finish secured his spot in Tuesday's final and fulfilled a longtime dream of breaking the 59-second barrier.

"To go under 59 has always been a dream of mine and to actually see it on the board is just like 'wow,'" Kelly said after the race. He credited the supportive team environment and crowd energy for pushing him to new heights.

The breaststroke final promises to be fierce, with Britain's Adam Peaty, the Paris 2024 silver medalist, also advancing with a 58.94 semifinal time.

These performances show how international competitions create the perfect stage for athletes to push past their limits and inspire the next generation of swimmers.
