Team USA Wins Overtime Thriller to Reach Hockey Semifinals

After five missed shots in the sudden death period, Hughes' sixth attempt found the net and sparked celebrations across the arena.

The game stayed scoreless until late in the second period. Dylan Larkin deflected a Jack Hughes wrist shot past Swedish goalie Jakob Markstrom to give the Americans a 1-0 lead with under nine minutes left in the frame.

Sweden dominated the third period but couldn't break through. Adrian Kempe hit the post with 2:30 remaining, keeping American hopes alive by inches.

With 100 seconds left, Sweden pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Ten seconds later, the gamble paid off when Mika Zibanejad one-timed a Lucas Raymond pass to tie the game.

Connor Hellebuyck had been perfect through 28 shots, but the dramatic equalizer forced a 10-minute, 3-on-3 overtime period. That's when Hughes became the hero, ending one of three quarterfinal games that went to overtime on Thursday.
