Tech Giant Cuts Emissions 56%, Hits 2030 Goal Early

A global technology company just proved that ambitious climate goals don't have to wait until the last minute.

HCLTech slashed its carbon emissions by 55.84 percent from 2020 levels, reaching its 2030 target in 2026. The India-based tech giant now powers nearly half of its operations with renewable energy, with data centers running almost 90 percent on clean power.

The shift away from fossil fuels has been dramatic. Conventional energy use dropped 31 percent since 2020, while renewable sources now supply 49.79 percent of total company energy. The numbers show that rapid transformation is possible even for large corporations with complex global operations.

Water conservation efforts have matched the energy achievements. HCLTech now replenishes 51 times more water than it consumes across all its offices and facilities worldwide. Employees use just 10.68 liters per person daily, and every campus in India has earned Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum certification since 2025.

The company's environmental wins have come alongside social progress. Women now hold more than half the board seats and represent 29.6 percent of the workforce. At local hiring facilities, women make up 66 percent of employees, and the number of workers with disabilities jumped 27.4 percent this year.

The Ripple Effect

HCLTech's community arm, HCLFoundation, increased its grant funding in India by 45 percent during the past year. The foundation has planted 3.5 million trees, restored 74,000 acres of land, and harvested 155 billion liters of water through conservation projects.

Over 8.4 million people in India have benefited from these programs, with women representing 54 percent of those reached. In the Americas, the company distributed $3 million in climate action grants to nonprofit organizations over three years.

The recognition has followed the results. HCLTech earned spots on TIME's World's Most Sustainable Companies list for two consecutive years and received top ratings from EcoVadis and MSCI for environmental and social governance.

The company aims to reach net zero emissions by 2040, using artificial intelligence and digital tools to shrink its environmental footprint even further while helping clients do the same.
