Tech Giants Buy Record Clean Energy Despite AI Challenges

Tech companies are buying more clean energy than ever before, setting new records in 2024 and 2025, even as they grapple with the massive power needs of artificial intelligence.

The challenge is real. Google's emissions have jumped nearly 50% over the past five years, while Amazon's rose 33% and Microsoft's climbed 23%. The culprit? Data centers that power AI can consume more electricity than entire cities.

But companies aren't giving up on their climate commitments. Microsoft President Brad Smith told the Associated Press he's "confident" the company can meet its 2030 goal to remove more carbon dioxide than it emits by investing in nuclear, solar, and hydropower.

In Wisconsin, Microsoft is balancing two new natural gas plants for a data center with major solar investments elsewhere in the state. Meta is doing something similar in Louisiana, offsetting gas plants with solar projects.

Google is investing heavily in wind, hydropower, battery storage, and advanced nuclear technology. The company is even partnering on a plant in Decatur, Illinois, that will capture carbon dioxide emissions and store them underground.

The Bright Side

Despite the growing energy demands, tech companies are proving that economic growth and environmental responsibility can coexist. Their record clean energy purchases are driving innovation in renewable technology and creating markets for carbon-free power sources.

Some new gas plants are replacing dirtier coal facilities, representing progress even if it's not as fast as hoped. The companies are also requiring their suppliers to reduce emissions, spreading climate action throughout their supply chains.

The transition to cleaner energy "is a marathon, not a sprint," as Microsoft notes. But the fact that these companies are still running the race while building the future of AI shows their commitment hasn't wavered.

These investments in wind, solar, and next-generation nuclear power are building the infrastructure that will eventually power both AI and a cleaner future.
