Ted Lasso Boosts Negro Leagues Museum Searches 5,000%

When "Ted Lasso" returned to Apple TV+ after three years, it brought more than laughs and feel-good moments. A single museum scene sent searches for Black baseball history soaring by over 5,000%.

In the season four premiere, character Leslie Higgins visits the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City while waiting for friends. There, he learns about legends like Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool Papa Bell, who faced segregation while revolutionizing America's pastime.

The scene draws a thoughtful parallel between the Negro Leagues' struggle and women's exclusion from professional soccer in England until 1971. When Higgins compares the two histories, museum tour guide Charles gently corrects him before acknowledging the soccer ban's shocking recency.

The moment came from a genuine place. Jason Sudeikis, the show's star and co-creator, met Negro Leagues Baseball Museum president Bob Kendrick back in 2022 and had been searching for the right way to feature it ever since.

"The storyline was very interesting," Kendrick told Major League Baseball's official blog. "They were looking at the history of the Negro Leagues and comparing it to the history of soccer."

The Ripple Effect

The impact hit immediately. Google searches related to Satchel Paige and the museum exploded compared to the previous year, introducing countless "Ted Lasso" fans to a crucial piece of American history they'd never heard of.

"It's going to introduce the museum to a lot of people who are fans of his show, but likely who have never heard of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum," Kendrick said. He believes the exposure will bring visitors from around the country to Kansas City to experience the museum firsthand.

For Kendrick, watching a Kansas City native champion his museum on a global platform struck deep. "To have one of your own tout why this place is so important, and to see fit that it's written into the script, man, it's just so special," he said.

The episode made him emotional, and for good reason. When entertainment meets education with this much heart, everyone wins.
