Teen Athlete Breaks Two Oceania Records in One Championship

A teenage runner from Suva just rewrote the record books twice in one competition.

Elijah Vakacegu, a 15-year-old student at Suva Grammar School in Fiji, broke two Oceania records at the 2026 Oceania Athletics Championships. The young athlete dominated the U16 boys division in both the 400 and 800 meter events.

In the 400 meters, Vakacegu crossed the finish line in 51.56 seconds, claiming gold and breaking a four-year-old record. The previous mark of 51.76 seconds was set by Tasmania's Ben Korotki back in 2022.

But Vakacegu wasn't done yet. He also took gold in the U16 boys 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes and 1.06 seconds, smashing another record that had stood since 2022 when New South Wales runner Jesiah Low posted 2 minutes and 3.72 seconds.

The Ripple Effect

Vakacegu's double victory puts Fiji's youth athletics program on the international map. His performance shows what's possible when young athletes from smaller island nations get opportunities to compete on regional stages.

The teenager's success could inspire a new generation of Pacific Island runners. When kids see someone from their own community breaking records at 15, it changes what they believe they can achieve.

These weren't just wins by narrow margins. Vakacegu improved the 400-meter record by two-tenths of a second and the 800-meter mark by more than two and a half seconds, significant margins in competitive running.

His achievement also highlights the strength of Fiji's school sports programs. Suva Grammar School now has a double record holder representing their athletic program on the international stage.

One teenager, two races, two records, and countless young athletes who now have a new role model to look up to.
