Teen Captain Named 'Unsung Hero' for Uplifting Her School

When Chioma Okafor heard she'd won Essex County's Unsung Hero award, the Columbia High School senior felt surprised and gratified. But to everyone who's watched her lead with kindness for four years, the honor made perfect sense.

Essex County's Unsung Hero program recognizes one 12th grader from each high school who makes a real difference without chasing recognition. Okafor's impact spans basketball captain, flag football captain, student council vice president, volunteer tutor, and co-founder of an athletic training club.

Balancing so many roles taught her crucial lessons. "When you do a lot of things, it can be overwhelming and you have to learn how to manage your time better," she told Village Green. "You can't waste time if you don't have much to waste."

But time management wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part was believing she belonged in the first place.

Her advice to other students captures her philosophy perfectly: "Don't take yourself out of something until you are taken out of it. People are not willing to try because they think they won't make the cutoff. You only miss the shots you don't take."

What drives Okafor isn't personal achievement. It's watching someone's face light up when they feel supported.

"When you help somebody and you see the change in their mood, it's almost like a reward," she said. "Making people happy and seeing that happiness come from them."

At the March Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Jason Bing praised Okafor's "commitment to uplifting others and leading with integrity." Board President Will Meyer put it more simply: "She has clearly been an uplifting force for her peers."

But Okafor's vision extends beyond individual moments of kindness. She wants her community to recognize how precious connection really is.

"I think community is such a big thing, people don't realize that until they have it or they lose it," she said. "People should be kinder to each other."

Her goal for the future reflects the same refusal to settle: "What I aim to achieve is always to reach my potential, never settle."

One high schooler chose kindness over recognition, and an entire county noticed anyway.
