Teen Debuts for Man United, Gets Scotland World Cup Call

Tyler Fletcher was supposed to watch the World Cup from the stands with his twin brother Jack and their dad Darren this summer. Instead, the 18-year-old Manchester United midfielder will wear Scotland's jersey at the tournament after an incredible turn of events.

Fletcher had played exactly 17 minutes of senior football across two substitute appearances when Scotland manager Steve Clarke made the surprise call. Most of those minutes came on the final day of the Premier League season at Brighton.

The family had tickets as fans to support Scotland in the United States. Darren Fletcher, who earned 80 caps for Scotland but never played in a major tournament himself, was going to enjoy watching from the sidelines with his sons after a tough season coaching United's Under-18s.

Everything changed when Clarke invited Tyler to Scotland's training camp last week. The coaches wanted to give the teenager a taste of international football, nothing more. But Fletcher's professionalism and work ethic during those sessions made an immediate impression.

When Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour suffered a first-half injury in Saturday's friendly against Curacao, Clarke brought Fletcher on at halftime. The youngster's mature performance sealed the deal.
