Teen Driver Kimi Antonelli Makes F1 History at Suzuka

A teenager is leading the most competitive racing series on Earth, and he's doing it with a maturity that belies his age.

Kimi Antonelli won his second straight Formula 1 race at Japan's legendary Suzuka Circuit on Sunday, catapulting the 19-year-old Italian into the championship lead. He's now the youngest driver in F1's 75-year history to top the points table.

The victory didn't come easy. After claiming pole position, Antonelli suffered a disastrous start and plummeted to sixth place on the opening lap while his rivals streaked ahead.

Then came the turning point. Mercedes teammate George Russell was leading when a safety car deployed after Ollie Bearman's heavy crash near the race's midpoint. The timing allowed Antonelli to pit for fresh tires and rejoin at the front of the pack.

From there, the teenage sensation simply drove away from the field, winning by nearly 14 seconds. Russell struggled to fourth place, meaning Antonelli now leads his experienced teammate by 9 points after just three races.

"It feels pretty good. Of course it's still early days to think about the championship but we're in a good way," Antonelli said after the race. He quickly identified his weak spot: race starts, which have cost him positions all season.

With three weeks until the next race in Miami, Antonelli plans to spend his time practicing clutch drops. "You can easily win or lose races with that," he acknowledged.
