Teen Halfback Wins Two Championships in One Season

Most teenage athletes dream of winning one championship. Isaiya Katoa won two in the span of a few weeks, and it changed everything.

In 2022, the then 18-year-old halfback faced a unique challenge. After the Dolphins signed him on his birthday, tension with his former club Penrith saw him sidelined from their Under 21s team for most of the season.

But Katoa didn't waste the time. He led Barker College to a rugby union championship and played local footy back home.

Then Penrith called him back in, not for the Under 21s but straight into a reserve grade semifinal. Despite limited time with the older squad, Katoa scored one try and set up two more in a 22-14 victory.

A week later came his first grand final with the Under 19s team against Newcastle. The match went to double extra time with scores locked at 18-all, and it became one of the hardest games some players say they've ever experienced.

"He missed a few field goals in that game but even that's a credit to him. He stayed calm and when he needed to he nailed it," teammate Billy Scott recalled.

Katoa kicked the winning field goal in golden point. Six finals appearances in one season, two premierships, and a legend was born.

Why This Inspires

Katoa's journey shows what happens when talent meets resilience. Being excluded from his team for most of the season could have derailed a young player's confidence, but he used the setback as fuel.

His former teammates remember a player who stayed present under pressure. "You could tell from a young age that he'd play NRL," Scott said. "He was so mature, so calm and ahead of the game."

Opposition players spent entire weeks studying video just on him, a testament to his multi-dimensional skill set.

Four years later, Katoa has proven the hype was warranted. The Dolphins' gamble on signing a teenager with limited recent junior experience paid off spectacularly.

On Saturday, he'll make his NRL semifinal debut against the Warriors in Auckland as one of rugby league's top young playmakers. It's been four years since his last finals match, but that remarkable 2022 season prepared him for moments exactly like this.
