Teen Kimi Antonelli Wins 2nd Straight F1 Race in Japan

A teenager is rewriting Formula 1 history books, and the racing world can't look away.

Italian driver Kimi Antonelli captured his second straight Formula 1 victory Sunday at Japan's Suzuka circuit, finishing more than 13 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri. At 19 years old, he's now the youngest driver ever to lead the season championship standings with 72 points from just three races.

The Mercedes driver won his first career race two weeks ago in China, making him the second-youngest winner in F1 history. Only Max Verstappen was younger when he claimed his first victory in 2016 at age 18.

Sunday's win came despite a rocky start that dropped Antonelli to sixth place after the first lap. But the young Italian fought his way back to the front, taking the lead on lap 22 and never looking back.

"It's too early to think about the championship, but we're in a good way," Antonelli said after the race. He acknowledged his starts need work but showed the determination that's making him a fan favorite.

Mercedes is dominating the early 2026 season with victories in all three opening races. The team appears to have mastered the new car regulations featuring a 50-50 split between traditional engine power and electric battery power, plus lighter and more compact designs that have challenged many veteran drivers.
