Teen Lifeguard Battles Monster Waves to Save 10-Year-Old

When massive waves swept a 10-year-old child into dangerous surf at Santa Cruz's Seabright Beach, a teenage lifeguard didn't hesitate to dive into what witnesses called some of the most terrifying conditions they'd ever seen.

Ryder, just 16 years old, battled tsunami-like swells to reach the struggling child. Video of the rescue shows the high school student repeatedly disappearing beneath towering waves while keeping a tight grip on the boy.

The teenager strategically gulped air before ducking under each crashing breaker. Each time he resurfaced, he still had hold of the child.

Multiple beachgoers rushed to help as wave after wave engulfed the pair. Many were quickly overwhelmed by the powerful surf and couldn't reach them.

"It caught a lot of people off-guard," said Scott Vander Dussen, who filmed the rescue. "Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment's time."

Witnesses say the struggle lasted much longer than the viral video shows. Through it all, Ryder never let go.

The lifeguard eventually pulled the boy safely onto shore. The child was reunited with his family and evaluated by paramedics.

Ryder's mother says her son was simply doing the job he loves. When supporters asked about setting up a GoFundMe, she directed them instead to the Santa Cruz County Parks Department's Junior Guards program, where Ryder and many local lifeguards received their training.

Her response captures something powerful about true heroes. They don't seek recognition or reward. They see someone in danger and act.

The teen's courage also highlights an important conversation his mother raised about recognizing lifeguards as first responders. Along the Santa Cruz coastline, they face dangerous conditions to protect others every single day.
