Teen Lifeguard Invited to White House After Ocean Rescue

When a young boy was swept 15 yards offshore by powerful waves at a Santa Cruz beach, one 16-year-old lifeguard didn't hesitate to dive into danger.

The unnamed teen lifeguard's rescue at Seabright State Beach on Saturday earned him more than gratitude. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he'll invite the young hero and his family to the White House for a "High Civilian Honor."

"We're going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor," Trump posted on X. "Very brave, he deserves it!"

Witness Scott Vander Dussen captured the dramatic rescue on video. He watched as the lifeguard sprinted into churning surf without pause.

"I saw the lifeguard just run straight out into the water, and, you know, he dove in, setting fear aside," Vander Dussen said. The waves had changed suddenly, overpowering the child who was already in the water.

The video shows the teen battling wave after wave while gripping the struggling boy. At one point, beachgoers tried to help but were knocked back by the powerful surf.

"The lifeguard just had a gorilla grip on that young man, held him from getting swept back out," Vander Dussen recalled. A second lifeguard entered the water to assist, and together they pulled the child safely to shore.

California State Parks officials confirmed the boy had lost his balance and was knocked down by a wave before being swept offshore. Both lifeguards' quick response meant everyone made it back safely.

The Ripple Effect

This rescue was one of 34 reported that weekend alone in Santa Cruz County as massive swells pounded the coastline. The dramatic video has reminded countless beachgoers about ocean safety during dangerous conditions.

Vander Dussen believes the outcome speaks to the lifeguards' training and dedication. "If the lifeguards were not out there, it would have had a different ending," he said. "He was in desperate need of help, and those two lifeguards went in and did what needed to be done."

The 16-year-old's courage shows how everyday heroes walk among us, ready to risk everything when someone needs help.
