Teen Lifeguard Saves 10-Year-Old From 10-Foot Waves in California

When 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai lost his footing in ankle-deep water at Seabright Beach, he had seconds before powerful swells pulled him into the Pacific Ocean. What happened next became a moment of extraordinary courage that a grateful father says he can never repay.

Ryder Williams, just 16 years old, saw Nathaniel get swept away and didn't hesitate. The teenage lifeguard radioed for help and raced into 10-foot waves with dangerous riptides and currents that made even standing dangerous.

"After the first wave, I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard," Williams said. Video of the rescue shows him diving into an incoming wave while gripping the unconscious boy, refusing to let go despite the ocean's force.

The boy had been swept 15 yards into the surf at the Santa Cruz beach, about 60 miles south of San Francisco. Another lifeguard and several bystanders jumped in to help, though Williams warned the civilians to return to shore for their safety.

Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, was home in Dallas when his son called that evening. "My son told me that he drowned, and my son told me that he went unconscious," Rai said. "He was very subdued, still in a state of shock."

By the next morning, Rai had watched the rescue video that has since caught national attention. The boy was released to his family after a medical evaluation with no serious injuries, though he continues processing the trauma.

Why This Inspires

Williams' humility stands out as much as his heroism. "I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely," he said. "This is my job and I love what I do."

The 16-year-old also made sure to honor his fellow lifeguards. "I'm thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day," he said.

Rai has reached out to Williams and hopes to thank him in person. "He ran into that water despite those conditions that are deadly," the grateful father said. "He's risking his own safety."

Every day, lifeguards like Williams train for moments they hope will never come, and when they do, they're ready to run toward danger while others run away.
