Teen Lifeguard Saves 10-Year-Old From Brutal California Surf

When Ryder Williams saw a 10-year-old boy lose his footing in ankle-deep water at Seabright State Beach, he had seconds to act. The 16-year-old lifeguard grabbed his rescue buoy and sprinted into dangerous surf that would test everything he'd trained for.

Video captured by a bystander shows Ryder fighting through massive waves on July 25, pulling young Nathaniel toward shore as the ocean relentlessly knocked them back. When concerned beachgoers tried to help, Ryder waved them away because the conditions were too dangerous.

Fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen eventually jumped in to help pull both Ryder and Nathaniel safely to shore. Minutes after the rescue, Ryder climbed back into his tower and finished his shift.

Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, watched the viral video from afar while his son vacationed with family in California. He said Nathaniel lost consciousness during the rescue and wouldn't have survived another two or three seconds in the water.

"If I was watching that video, I wasn't sure if he'll make it," Rai told ABC News. "I wasn't sure, honestly, if the lifeguard would make it out with those conditions."

Why This Inspires

Ryder's response to the attention shows the heart behind the heroics. "This is my job and I love what I do," he said in a statement. "I'm thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day."

His humility highlights an important truth: while this rescue went viral, lifeguards along the coast perform similar saves constantly. Nearly 2,000 water rescues happened in Los Angeles County alone that same weekend as dangerous rip currents threatened beachgoers up and down the West Coast.

Rai's gratitude captures what many parents felt watching the video. "God bless them, and thank you," he said. "I cannot express sufficient gratitude."

Nathaniel is still recovering in California, alive because a teenage lifeguard refused to let the ocean win.
