Teen Lifeguard Saves 10-Year-Old From Massive Waves

When massive waves suddenly turned calm ocean waters dangerous at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder had seconds to act.

A 10-year-old child was swept into a rip current as waves rose to several feet high. Ryder plunged into the churning water and wrapped the boy in a bear hug, determined not to let the ocean separate them.

Video of the July rescue shows Ryder spotting an incoming wave and bracing himself to take the impact. Both he and the child disappear under the water, but Ryder never lets go.

"The waves, I wouldn't say they were tranquil, but they were what you'd expect, a normal cadence and intensity," witness Scott Vander Dussen told NBC Bay Area. "And then that just changed in a heartbeat."

The sudden shift caught beachgoers off guard. "This young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment's time," Vander Dussen said.

Several people rushed to help hold onto the pair as waves continued crashing around them. One was a second lifeguard, while others were bystanders trying to prevent the two from being pulled further out to sea.

Santa Cruz State Parks officials later cautioned that while well-intentioned, untrained helpers can sometimes create additional problems during water rescues. Professional lifeguards are trained for exactly these scenarios.

Ryder's courage highlights the critical role lifeguards play in protecting beachgoers. At just 16 years old, he demonstrated the training, quick thinking, and bravery needed to save a life in dangerous conditions.

His actions are especially important given that lifeguards are only on duty at Seabright Beach during summer months. Ryder was in the right place at the right time, and his refusal to give up saved a young life.

Paramedics evaluated the child after the rescue and released him to his parents unharmed. Ryder became a hero on social media, where thousands praised his life-saving efforts.

"That initial lifeguard deserves public recognition and a meritorious medal for service and bravery. Fantastic," one person wrote. Others called for laws recognizing lifeguards as first responders.
