Teen Lifeguard Saves Boy From Massive Waves at Santa Cruz

When a young boy got caught in powerful waves at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, a teenage lifeguard didn't hesitate to dive into the churning surf to save him.

Witness Scott Vander Dussen captured the intense rescue on camera, later saying he'd never seen anything like it. "I just didn't know how it was going to turn out," he recalled.

The lifeguard ran fearlessly into the huge waves, reaching the struggling boy and holding onto him throughout the ordeal. Several bystanders tried to help but were quickly knocked down by the powerful surf.

While such instincts are natural, lifeguards explained these well-meaning efforts can create more victims. "I understand the instinct to want to go and help someone," said Anaiis Moise, Marine Safety Officer for the City of Santa Cruz. "Often the more effective way to help is going to be getting someone who is trained and professional to respond."

After a relentless fight against the waves, a second lifeguard joined the rescue. Together, they brought the boy safely back to shore.

California State Parks lifeguards have made 34 rescues in Santa Cruz County since the weekend began. "Conditions change rapidly, and what seems normal is potentially deadly," their statement warned.

Vander Dussen shared the video with an important message. "My heart for sharing the video was to bring a cautionary tale to people coming out to the beach," he explained. "We want to see people come out, have a good time, enjoy the weather, but get home safely."

Local resident Karen Crivelli emphasized that beaches remain safe for those who follow basic rules. "The beaches are safe as long as you don't turn your back to the water and you obey the rules," she said.

With strong surf expected throughout the week, lifeguards are urging everyone to know their limits before entering the water, and that young hero's quick action proves why their presence matters.
